WEST LAWN, PA. -- With an 8-7 win earlier in the day to force a winner-take-all final game, Gwynedd Mercy fell 4-2 in the title game of the 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament to Keystone.
The Griffins needed a win in game #6 to force an if necessary game, which turned out to be the case. Gwynedd trailed 5-4 heading into the eighth but plated three runs to take their first lead of the game.
Dave Tatoian came on once again to try and nail things down, working his way through a hit and error that led to a Keystone run. With runners on second and third, he got a strikeout and a fly out to keep the season alive and send the teams to a final game to decide the CSAC Championship.
Ryan Keen hit a three-run double in that eighth inning as part of his four RBIs.
Josh Lopez walked three times and scored twice, while
Sachael Sciarretta was 2-for-3 with two runs. Starter
Bryan Kaelin went a season-high seven innings, scattering five runs on nine hits with no walks and a strikeout to pick up the win.
In the day's second game, the defending champion Giants struck first, scoring two runs in the third. In the fourth, GMercyU got a run back when Keen scored on
Tommy Nardini's RBI single.
Keystone made it 3-1 in the fifth with a two-out RBI single from Mohammed Hussein, but once again, Gwynedd battled back, getting a run on a double from
Shaughn Wright to score Keen, who had walked for the third time in the game.
Now down a run, the Griffins had a prime spot to tie things up in the seventh. Sciarretta led off the frame with a triple to left but a defensive play by Keystone third baseman Bray Curreri kept the potential tying run at third.
Justin Curtin sent a hard grounder that was snagged by Curreri for the first out. KC starter Nathan Hinckley got out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Giants added to their lead with an RBI single from Ryan Callahan.
Gwynedd did get two on with two outs in the ninth, but a force play at second was the ender that closed the door on the Griffins' outstanding season.
Nardini and Sciarretta each had two hits apiece. Hinkley limited GMercyU to five hits while fanning seven. Curreri was named tournament MVP for Keystone (32-10), who captured their tenth conference crown in a row.
The loss marks the end of the careers of the team's five seniors: Wright,
Mike Di Ianni,
Justin Forktus,
Austin Lescanec, and
Nick DeRitis. The group has helped the team reach the playoffs the last three seasons, compiling a 72-71-1 overall and 43-30 conference record over that span.
Gwynedd Mercy finishes the season with a final mark of 21-4.
