WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fell, 5-0, to Scranton in an NCAA DIII Women's Tennis Tournament First Round match played in the Williams College Regional Thursday morning.
Gwynedd Mercy ends the season at 14-4, while Scranton improved to 19-3 on the year, and moves on to face the host Ephs on Friday.
The three doubles matches finished in reverse order. The #3 duo from Scranton Elyse Smilnak/Katherine Loughlin came off the court first with an 8-0 win over the Griffins'
Nicolette Diaz and
Andrea Hernandez.
An 8-3 win by Emilia Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko over
Robyn Belen and
Jenna Trythall at #2 doubles gave the Royals a 2-0 lead. Scranton's Julia Frattaroli and Natasha DeNunzio completed the sweep of doubles notching an 8-4 win at #1 over
Katie Garthaus and
Natalie Danze.
The Royals went ahead 4-0 with a win at #6 singles and with Emilia Jakubek's 6-1, 6-0 win at #3 singles, the match and the Griffins' season came to a heroic end.
Gwynedd Mercy was making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament under head coach
Jim Holt.
