GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy nailed down the #1 seed in the CSAC Tournament winning game two of a CSAC Doubleheader, 8-0, over Cabrini. The Cavaliers took the first game, 9-5, in eight innings.
It is the first time in program history the Griffins (29-5, 20-2 CSAC) have secured the overall seed in the conference tournament.
Gwynedd needed one win of their two games on Sunday to lock up the top spot while the Cavaliers needed to win both to jump ahead for first place. Cabrini took the first game, scoring a run in the top of the seventh to tie and four in the eighth to win the first game and turn the second into a winner-take-all.
Game one
An RBI triple from
Jessica Behr in the first and an infield single to score Behr from
Tori Sherwood in the third, staked GMercyU to a 2-0 lead. Cabrini scored four runs in the fourth, including a two-run double with two outs to go ahead, 4-2.
The Cavaliers threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings, getting runners on, but starter
Melissa Hess fought her way out of the jams to keep her squad within striking distance. It would pay dividends in the bottom half of the sixth, as
Erin Hallahan delivered a two-run double to knot things up at 4-4. Now with two outs and a runner on second,
Alyssa Morales singled to right to knock in
Brianna Polly for a one-run lead.
Cabrini led off the seventh with a triple from Marissa Alpaugh. She then beat out a throw home on a grounder to second to lock up the teams at 5-5.
Amanda Clark led off the bottom half with a single to right, but was stranded after three fly outs, sending the game to extra innings.
In the eighth, Jenna Rodriguez singled in two runs with her bases loaded single. Alexandria Ramos added another two-run single to give the Cavaliers (22-10, 18-4 CSAC) a four-run lead. The Griffins went in order in the bottom half, forcing a game two showdown.
Behr and
Alex Kinal each had a pair of hits. Hess took the tough loss, throwing into the eighth.
Game two
The Griffins took advantage of a two-out error in the third to plate four runs and not look back.
Becki Christoffers added a huge two-out, two-run triple in the fourth to add to the lead.
Morales gave up just two hits, walking two and striking out two to help keep the Cabrini bats in check.
The Griffins would end it in the fifth on the eight-run rule.
Amanda Clark,
Lauren Waller, and Sherwood all reached in order to load the bases. Kinal was hit by a pitch to score Clark. Still with no outs, Polly grounded into a double play but not before Waller scored to put GMercy in the win column.
First-round action commences on Wednesday with the #3 seed hosting the #6 seed and the #4 hosting #5. The Griffins and Cavaliers have first-round byes and will await the winners as action starts Friday morning with the first game starting at 10 a.m. Check back here or the CSAC site for pairings after Wednesday's games.
