Griffins Edged Out By Salisbury In Championship Game

2018 Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament Championship

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins fell to Salisbury in the championship game of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip Off Tournament on Saturday, 71-64, in a game that was more than close. Neither team led by more than eight points as the contest featured six ties and 19 lead changes.

Gwynedd Mercy was led by Susan Bossler with a game-high 21 points as the senior was a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line. Chyanne Fine added a double-double (15 points/10 rebounds) along with three blocks. Olivia Roseman kicked in 13 points. Bossler and Roseman combined to hit six of the team's seven three-pointers.

Kaylyn French was Salisbury's scoring leader with 16 points. She was one of four Sea Gulls in double digit scoring as Salisbury grabbed a late lead and were able to hold off Gwynedd. Kylie Webb netted 13 points, three assists, a block, and a steal.

Fine scored eight of her points in the first quarter, as GMercyU carved out a 14-8 lead in the first 10 minutes. The team held Salisbury to just three field goals in the frame. Fine capitalized on a Salisbury turnover and hit her forth basket of the stanza, followed by a triple from Bossler to add to the lead.

Olivia Roseman was named to
the all-tournament team


Salisbury opened up the scoring in the second quarter with nine-straight points, but back-to-back three-pointers from Roseman and Bossler later in the quarter helped key a 28-23 lead at halftime.

Both teams came out hot in the second half with the Seagulls scoring early. The teams traded buckets throughout the period as a total of 12 lead changes took place. Roseman gave the Griffins the lead back by hitting a three off an assist from Denise Sacco with just under three minutes to play. A three from Megan Konig put the Seagulls ahead, but Sacco gave answered with two free throws for a one-point lead. The lead exchanged twice more before the end of the half on consecutive buckets, putting the score 48-47 heading into the fourth.

Shannon Carroll's driving hook in the paint in the fourth drew a foul and with the ensuing free throw, she put Gwynedd ahead62-58 with 3:54 remaining in the contest. The Sea Gulls took the lead for good as Rachel Ryan scored the first four points of a 10-0 run.  

In the consolation game, Albright defeated Keystone, 59-50.

Roseman was selected to the all-tournament team along with Gabby Boggs of Albright, Khaliah Gordon of Keystone, and Jada Welbon of Salisbury. Kylie Webb of Salisbury was named the tournament MVP.

The Griffins will be back in action this Tuesday in the third annual Battle of 309, when they square off at Arcadia at 6 p.m.
