GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Two goals in the final 10:48 of the second half helped Gwynedd Mercy come away with a 2-1 win over Lebanon Valley in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon.
Alyssa Tomsic assisted on the Griffins' first goal, eight minutes after Lebanon Valley took a 1-0 lead. She then netted the eventual game winner with 6:15 remaining in the contest.
In the first half, Gwynedd kept buzzing around the cage, producing nine shots and six penalty corners but could not get on the board. The defense held the Dutchwomen to just one shot after 35 minutes of action.
Lebanon Valley took advantage of a foul in the shooting circle and was awarded a penalty stroke with 18:33 left. Goalie
Sarah Crane got a piece of Danielle Alba's attempt, but not enough to keep it out of the net.
Swenk netted her third of the season as she one-timed home a pass from Tomsic off a corner at the 59:12 mark. After a Griffin timeout, Tomsic drove along the endline around a defender to beat goalie Nikki Willi for her third goal of the year and more importantly, the team's first lead of the day.
The defense did not allow a recorded shot the rest of the way to help ice the outcome.
Willi made nine of her 12 saves in the second half for LVC. Crane improved her record this season to 7-1 with the win.
Gwynedd Mercy now turns their attention to the Atlantic East Conference Tournament. The Griffins have earned the top overall seed and a first-round bye. They will host a semifinal game here on Wednesday, October 31st at 7 p.m.
