Softball Bows Out Of Playoffs With Loss At Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy's season came to an end in the first-round of the 2017 CSAC Softball Tournament as the sixth-seeded Griffins fell, 4-2, at third-seeded Immaculata on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mighty Macs used a two-run fourth to break a 2-2 game as Gwynedd and IU met in the conference playoffs for the fifth time.

Becki Christoffers was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Lauren Waller added two doubles. Marisa Bentley notched a pair of hits and scored a run as well.

IU got on the board in the first on an RBI single. The Griffins took advantage of two errors in the second to score twice. With runners on first and second, Erin Dowd reached on a dropped fly in right to score one run. Christoffers followed with a single to score Bentley for the 2-1 lead.

A sac fly in the third from Annemarie Bartow would knot the game up at 2 apiece.

In the fifth however, a key error with two on and two outs helped Immaculata (23-14) score two unearned runs to take the lead for good. Back-to-back singles would put two on with no outs. Starting pitcher Alyssa Morales would get a fly ball out and a force out to keep runners at first and second. Abby Carter's grounder to second was misplayed to allow a run to score. Jessica Bormann helped her cause with an RBI single to add an insurance run.

The Griffins threatened in the sixth, getting the bases loaded with two outs, but Bormann got out of the jam with a called third strike on Morales.

Morales worked out a tough spot herself in the bottom half, as the Mighty Macs had the sacks full with Bartow at the plate. Her first pitch was hit hard at Christoffers who was able to make the third out of the inning.

In the seventh, Waller doubled with two outs which sent the tying run to the plate. In an 11-pitch at bat, Bormann got Nikki Canfield looking on a called third strike to end the game.

Morales gave up just the two earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk on 11 hits. Bormann struck out three with two walks on 10 hits.

The game marked the end for the two seniors on the team, Bentley and Canfield. For Bentley, she owns a .308 batting average in 68 games with a .400 on-base and .393 slugging percentage. Canfield leaves the program as the all-time leader in doubles (25) and in a tie for most games started (143) as she has started every game in the last four years.

Gwynedd Mercy finishes the 2017 season with a final record of 17-18.
