Win Streak Snapped In CSAC Defeat To Neumann

ASTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their five-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Neumann as the Griffins fell, 5-1, to the Knights on Sunday in a rescheduled game from Friday.

GMercyU (9-5, 2-1 CSAC) scored a run late in the contest to make it a one-run game, but Neumann added three in the top of the ninth.

After a two-run single in the second with the bases loaded from Sam Banks to put the Knights (5-7, 1-2 CSAC) ahead, Gwynedd was held to five hits in the first six innings off of Neumann starter Grant Wallace. The Griffins would get two on in that sixth, but a grounder to first ended that chance. An inning later, GM had two on in scoring position with one out, but a strikeout and groundout kept the team off the board.

In the eighth, with Ryan Keen on second and Shaughn Wright at first, Josh Lopez slapped one down the line in left for an RBI single to pull Gwynedd to 2-1. Keen hustled home from second but Wright was put out trying to advance to third.

Neumann used a sac fly, and RBI single a run off a passed ball to plate three insurance runs in the ninth.

Gwynedd starter R.J. Boyle went six innings, yielding two runs on seven hits with just one walk and four strikeouts. Wallace also went six innings and fanned four batters.

Keen and Wright finished the day with two hits apiece.

The Griffins resume action on Wednesday when they head to Reading to face off with former PAC rival Alvernia in non-conference action.
