Seniors Star In Season-Closing Victory

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy topped their 2017 season with a 5-1 win over Bryn Athyn as the team hosted its Senior Day on Saturday.

Prior to the game, the squad took time to honor their six seniors and their families: Ryan Oyola, Cole Smith, Tim Dailey, Rob DiPierro, Brian Pease, and Matt Saba.

In the most fitting of fashions, Oyola, Dailey, and DiPierro would all score their first career goals. Sophomore Matt Bachmann added a pair to help GMercyU snap their winless streak and end the season on a high note.

Bachmann got things going in the 24th minute as he was able outrun a defender along the right side and fire off a shot for the 1-0 lead. With less than five minutes to go before halftime, DiPierro, a defender who was pinching up on the front  line, took a nice through pass from Smith who was able to bury his first collegiate tally.

Pease would set up Bachmann's second goal in the 54th minute followed by Dailey's unassisted effort as he beat Bryn Athyn keeper A.J. Clark just minutes later.

Oyola was subbed out of goal in the 30th minute to a loud ovation from the stands and the bench. He would return to the game as a forward where he was able to show off his offensive side.

With just under a minute in the contest, the Griffins were awarded a free kick from about 20 yards out and just off the center to the left. Oyola took the kick with his shot bending around the Lion wall and into the right corner of the net.

Clark would finish the day with five saves. David Camara scored the lone tally for Bryn Athyn (5-11).

Oyola recorded three saves while goal with Kace Peters finishing the game and registering two stops. For Oyola, he leaves the program in third place for goalie wins (14).

Gwynedd Mercy finishes the 2017 season with a final record of 2-15-1.
