GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy suffered its first Colonial States Athletic Conference defeat of the season as Cabrini downed the Griffins, 75-71, in overtime Monday night.
Bianca Adams poured in a career-high 18 points for GMercyU (6-8, 4-1 CSAC) while
Nicole Dombrowski had her second-straight double double, finishing with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, along with three assists, three steals and two blocks.
Charlotte Kucowski scored all of her 12 points in the second half. The game featured 11 scoring changes and eight ties while both teams battled back from deficits.
Nomi Washington scored a game-high 23 points while teammate Erin Dodds added 20 and Myonie Williamson scored 16 for Cabrini (7-7, 5-0 CSAC).
Williamson's three in the first broke a 4-4 tie, but
Julianna Hoisington answered with a three-point play on the ensuing possession.
Chyanne Fine and her putback underneath would cap a 7-0 run to give GM a 17-9 edge. Gwynedd lead 18-12 after one.
In the second, the Griffins had their largest lead of the game at 22-13 after two free throws from Dombrowski, but the Cavaliers countered with nine points in a row to tie it up with 4:21 before the break. Two triples from Dodds in a row gave Cabrini their second lead of the game and they ended the half up by three, 31-28.
The two teams went back and forth at the beginning of the second half, as Cabrini would etch out their largest lead (37-30) after a bucket from Washington with 7:11 in the stanza. Adams' big three-pointer kickstarted a seven-point swing with Kucowski eventually tying it up at 37-37 on her jumper. After a free throw from Adams to give the Griffins a lead, the Cavs sunk two back-to-back trifectas to get back the lead to five. The Griffins were able to close the gap and trail 50-46 going into the fourth.Â
Hoisington put up the first two points of the fourth and grabbed a defensive rebound that allowed Adams to tie the game with her driving layup. Hoisington then sunk a bucket underneath to put GM ahead, 52-50. Kucowski hit the second of her two three-pointers of the evening with 7:02 left to break a 52-52 contest. Washington then netted the next five points for Cabrini, including a three, to give them a 59-57 edge. In all, there were five ties and three lead changes in the final period alone.
Kucowski put Gwynedd ahead, 63-61, with her jumper with 2:19 in regulation, but GMercyU had two-straight possessions where they forced defensive stops but could not find the dagger. Washington was able to tie it with her layup with 18 ticks. With no timeouts, Adams and the Griffins had a look to try and win it, but her three-pointer was off the mark.
A layup, two free throws, and a three to open up overtime, put the Cavs up seven. But back came Gwynedd, as Dombrowski hit a pair of free throws and
Larissa Leyes added a three to narrow the gap. Later down three,
Monet McGorda would grab a rebound off a miss and hit a tough jumper in the paint to pull within 72-71 with 38 seconds left. The Griffins would tie up a loose rebound after a Cabrini miss to get a jump ball with 5.5 seconds showing. However, the ensuing inbound was intercepted by Washington at mid court and with a foul called, Dodds went to the line and hit both for a three-point edge. With no timeouts, the inbound after the free throws was intercepted again to help seal the outcome.
Hoisington would finish with seven points and tie a personal-best with four assists. McGorda had four points and four rebounds while Leyes totaled five points. The team shot 25-of-72 (34%) but just 2-of-9 in the overtime. Fine registered eight points, seven boards, and a steal.
Cabrini shot 41% (26-of-62) and hit nine three-pointers, four from Dodds.
The Griffins return to action at home this Wednesday against Keystone at 7 p.m.Â
