GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss Saturday afternoon to Elizabethtown to snap their three-game winning streak.
Emma Christman scored twice for the Blue Jays, including the game winner 1:25 into the second OT. Her first tally gave ETown a 1-0 lead in the first at the 18:08 mark, where the score stood into the half.
Melissa Russo put GMercyU (4-2) on the board with her sixth goal of the season, when she connected on a backhand shot assisted by
Kaitlyn Lutz to tie the contest. Both teams would have opportunities to win the game in regulation but were unable to find the back of the cage. GMercyU had a penalty stoke attempt with just over five minutes in regulation, but the attempt was wide.
During the first overtime Elizabethtown (2-3) outshot the Griffins, 3-2, but goalie
Samantha Soscia would stop all three Etown tries. A second penalty stroke chance by Gwynedd came with 34 seconds left in the extra frame, but the outcome was the same as the first.
Christman would win it in the second OT, as she was able to get back to her feet first after a collision of players in the arc and was able to dribble the winning goal into the cage.
The Griffins had their chances as well out-shooting the Blue Jays, 17-12, and holding a 19-8 corner advantage but the duo of Hannah Mack (eight saves) and Margo Donlin (four saves) held off the Griffin rally. Soscia finished with eight stops while
Noelle Schillinger added a defensive save.
GMercyU will host The College of New Jersey on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
