Griffins Are Playoff Bound With Big Win At Centenary

Hens slugs two homers in regular season finale

ALLAMUCHY, N.J. -- Senior Chris Hens was 3-for-5 with a pair of two-run home runs to help Gwynedd Mercy clinch a playoff berth in the Griffin's 11-5 win at Centenary on Monday.

The Griffins, who were battling with the Cyclones for the last playoff entrant, enter the postseason as the #4 seed and will play at top-seeded Keystone on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the first game of the double elimination tournament.

Hens' second two-run blast broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth as GMercyU (19-19, 10-8 CSAC) would add five more in the top half of the ninth to open up a sizable advantage. David Blount also added three hits while Beau Fleming knocked in three runs.

Freshman hurler Frank Chubb went seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and just one walk. Sachael Sciarretta worked a scoreless eighth and ninth to help close it out.

Scoreless into the fourth, a lead-off double from rookie Dave Tatoian would put a runner in scoring position. After a groundout to advance him to third, Hens would send a ball over the fence in left center to put GMercyU up 2-0. Centenary would get one back in the bottom half on an RBI groudout.

In the fifth, Jason Mulvey would reach on a fielder's choice and swipe to bases to eventually move up to third. His effort was rewarded as Blount delivered a two-out single to reclaim the two-run lead.

Fleming got into the act in the sixth, doubling home Tatoian to make it 4-1.

The Cyclones (19-14, 9-9 CSAC) would cross three runs in the seventh, two of which were unearned. Nick Daniele knocked a pair with his two-run single.

As it unfolded similarly in the fourth, Tatoian would lead off the frame with a hit, move up to second on a groundout and come home on Hens' second dinger on the day. The ninth inning saw a big two-run double from Fleming and an RBI triple from Mulvey to key a five-spot.

Tatoian scored four times and had four hits and stole a base.

Thursday's other playoff game has #3 Neumann at #2 Immaculata. Thursday's winners will play at Keystone on Friday at 10:30 a.m. while the losers will play in an elimination game at Marywood also on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
