LAPLUME, PA. -- A walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning allowed Immaculata to knock out Gwynedd Mercy from the CSAC Tournament, 3-2, Saturday morning in an elimination game.
Both teams scored two runs each in the fifth and maneuvered out of potential scoring threats in the innings that followed.
Justin Curtin knocked in
Christian Carmolingo to put the Griffins up 1-0. He would later move up to second on a single, and with two outs, race home on a base hit from
Dave Tatoian to make it 2-0.
The Mighty Macs countered with a two spot in the bottom half. With two on, Ryan Tecco would plate Jason McCormick with a RBI single to cut into the lead. On the play, Mike Lascomb went to third while Tecco advanced to second on the throw home to try and get McCormick. Now with two outs, Ryan Ficca's hit to left center easily scored Lascomb, but a big defensive play from
David Blount, who would gun down Tecco at home to keep the game deadlocked.
From there, the teams had chances to take the lead. Gwynedd would get two on with one out in the sixth, but IU was able to turn a double play to end the threat.
Gwynedd starter
Mike Di Ianni allowed just the two runs on four hits with four walks while fanning seven as he pitched into the seventh. Immaculata put two on off of reliever
Andrew Hill, but he was able to get a key foul out in left for the third out. Hill would also work out of a similar spot in the eighth with two on and two out, and would get a fly out to move on to the ninth.
In that top half of the ninth, with
Tommy Nardini on second and Carmolingo on first with one out, IU starter Dan Whalen eked out the frame with an inning-ending twin killer and off to extras they went.
Ficca reached to lead of the 10th and was sacrificed to second. Hill stonewalled the Mighty Macs with a strikeout and groundout to move things to the 11th.
After Gwynedd went down in order in the top half, IU would get their first two batters on via throwing errors. A fly ball to left for the first out precluded an intentional walk to load the bases.
Sachael Sciarretta would come on to relieve Hill, but on his very first pitch, Rob Wallace would drive in the winning run with a single to left to score McCormick.
Tatoian and
Shaughn Wright would both go 2-for-4 on the day. Carmolingo was officially 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks.
Ficca and Justin Dempsey each had two hits for Immaculata (22-20). Whalen would pitch 10 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.
The season comes to a close for the team's five seniors: Carmolingo, Hill,
Chris Hens,
Beau Fleming, and
David Blount. All four players would etch their names in the program record books for career and game accomplishments. Carmolingo leaves with the fifth-best on-base percentage (.460). Hens' five-RBI performance on two occasions ranks him fourth in a single-game record. Hill's 10 saves ranks him second and his 3.30 ERA puts him fourth all-time. Blount's 70 career stolen bases will put him third while his five swipes in a game is a school record. Lastly, Fleming holds or is tied for top marks for hits and doubles in a game, with 5 and 3 respectively coming last season vs. Susquehanna. He will leave with the best fielding percentage in school history (.995). In 413 chances, he has only committed two errors.
The Griffins finish the season with a final mark of 19-21.
