CLARKS SUMMIT, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Softball Team set a school record for wins in a season with their CSAC Doubleheader sweep at Summit on Friday. The Griffins took game one, 2-0, and the second, 14-3.
The win in game two gave GMercyU its 23rd victory of the season. The previous mark of 22 was set twice in 2000 and 2008.
The two wins also make it 14 in their last 16 games and helps them keep pace for the top playoff seed. Tomorrow, GMercyU battles first-place Neumann here for two big games starting at noon.
In game one,
Alyssa Morales struck out a season-high 12 batters while scattering six hits to earn the win.
After a sac fly in the first for a 1-0 lead, Morales helped her cause with an RBI triple in the third. It would be all the offense needed as she would allow just two baserunners after the fourth.
Becki Christoffers scored twice and walked in the win.
Game two saw the Griffins break open a one-run game with a four spot in the fourth and a six-run frame in the fifth.
Jessica Behr was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI's while
MaryKate Ballerino knocked in three runs, scored three times and added two triples in a 3-for-3 day.
Nikki Canfield also drove in three while Morales also had three hits and three runs.
Behr's two-run double and Ballerino's RBI triple highlighted the fourth, which opened up a 4-3 Gwynedd lead. Morales would connect on a two-run single and Behr would strike again for a two-run, two bagger as part of the six runs in the fifth.
