Griffins go 5-2 on their Spring Break journey

AUBURNDALE, FL. -- Gwynedd Mercy went 5-2 during their spring break trip down in Florida to move their overall record above the .500 mark. The Griffins would split a DH with Muskingum then win four in a row thanks to a sweep of Gordon and wins over Daniel Webster and McDaniel. They would close out the trip with a tough 11-inning defeat to Keene State.

On Sunday, March 6th, Mike Di Ianni picked up the win, throwing six innings allowing only four hits and striking out two batters for the Griffins' 6-2 victory in game one over Muskingum. Justin Curtin had a pair of multiple-hit games for GMercyU to kick start their spring break trip. He went 2-for-3 in both games against Muskingum. He was also solid defensively recording six defensive assists. Jason Mulvey broke open game one of the doubleheader with his bases-clearing triple to highlight a four-run second inning. Sachael Sciarretta closed the game working a 1-2-3 seventh inning. The Griffins dropped game two, 3-1, as Christopher Hens was 2-for-3 while Mulvey added the lone RBI.

Gwynedd Mercy 11, Gordon 7 - Game 1 (9 inn.)
Gwynedd Mercy 12, Gordon 5 - Game 2

Gwynedd swept a doubleheader from Gordon on Tuesday March, 8th, winning game one, 11-7, in nine innings and taking game two, 12-5. The Griffins struck early for two runs as David Blount singled to plate Mulvey who led off the frame with a double.  Blount would later score in the inning on a defensive error.  The Fighting Scots would answer back with three runs in the bottom of the first but the Griffins would tie the game 3-3 on a Mulvey sac fly to plate Christian Carmolingo. Gordon would go back on top in the bottom of the third, but Gwynedd would answer in the top of the 4th on a Blount bases loaded walk.

Trailing into their last at bat, down 6-4 in the top of the 7th, a pair of back-to-back one-out singles by Beau Fleming and Hens, pinch hitter Evan Miller would score pinch runners Pat Ryder and Jimmy Pisani with his single down the left field line to tie the game 6-6.  Reliever Sachael Sciarretta came in the bottom of the seventh to replace starter Frank Chubb, who pitched six innings while striking out five.  Sciarretta worked out of a bases loaded jam to send the game in to extra frames.  Neither team plated a run in the eighth but the Griffins would strike for five in the top of the 9th. Nick Mulvey and Tommy Nardini led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  A strong defensive play from Gordon would record the first out the inning leaving runners still at first and second base.  Justin Curtin would follow the out with a single to load the bases.  Jason Mulvey drew a walk for his second RBI of the game. Blount followed the walk with a two-run for a 9-6 lead. Dave Tatoian would cap off the inning with a two-run single as well scoring both Mulvey and Blount.  Sciarreta let up a lone run in the bottom half, but would record the victory working three innings while striking out two batters. Nardini and Jason Mulvey both recorded three hits for the Griffins while Blount, Hens and Curtin picked up two hits as well. Game two saw both teams score runs throughout the first four innings with the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth the Griffins exploded for five runs to take a 10-5 lead. Curtin's two run single was part of the scoring in the inning. In their next at-bat, a two-run double by Josh Lopez would add insurance runs to take a 12-5 lead. Zach Dennis worked six innings for his first win of the season striking out five batters. Curtin finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBI's. Fleming, Hens and Lopez each recorded a pair of hits.

Gwynedd Mercy 8, Daniel Webster 3
On Friday the Griffins won their third game in a row with an 8-3 victory over Daniel Webster. The Griffins got on the board first, plating two runs on RBI singles by Blount and Fleming.  The Eagles would cut the lead to 2-1 scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth.  However starting pitcher Gino Tripodi would keep DWC off the scoreboard over the next four innings to pick up his first victory of the season, working six and a third innings. The Griffins would give Tripodi insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings plating two runs in each frame.  Nardini would score from third on a pick off error in the sixth while Mulvey would tack on a triple to plate Curtin.  Hens' RBI single would add a run in the seventh along with a Christian Carmolingo bases loaded hit by pitch. Conner Dilks worked 2.2 innings in relief getting the Griffins out of a jam with a double play to close out the seventh and a pair of strike outs to end the eighth. In the ninth, he got another ground ball double play and a pop up to end the game. Both Mulvey and Nardini picked up three hits each at the plate while Blount and Tatoian were both 2-for-5.

Gwynedd Mercy 13, McDaniel 2
The Griffins made it four in a row with a 13-2 victory over previously undefeated McDaniel on Sunday, March 13th.  The Griffins and Green Terror played in the historic Chain of Lakes Stadium, once spring training homes to the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox in Winter Haven. The Griffins received another strong outing from sophomore pitcher Mike Ianni as he tossed a complete game, holding McDaniel to six hits while striking out four. Gwynedd's offense struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Shaughn Wright plated Hens on a sacrifice fly.  Carmolingo would score Nardini with his first of two RBI singles on the day.  McDaniel would cut the deficit to 2-1 in the visitor half of the third but the Griffins would respond in the home half tacking on two more runs as Hens struck for a two-run single to score both Blount and Tatoian. GMercyU would add on three more in the fourth with an RBI single by Jason Mulvey followed by a two run-home run by Blount for the 7-1 lead after four full. McDaniel would get a run back in the fifth but the Griffins would respond again with RBI's from both Hens and Carmolingo.  Gwynedd would put the game out of reach in the home half of the sixth plating four runs Hens finished the day 3-for-3 with 4 RBI's.  Nardini also added three hits while Blount, Fleming and Carmolingo each recorded two.

Keene State 6, Gwynedd Mercy 5 (11 inn.)
Laslty, GMercyU fell, 6-5, to Keene State in an 11-inning walk-off affair to close out their spring trip on Monday afternoon. Gwynedd jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to RBI's from Tatoian and Mulvey.  The Owls would tie the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single. Chubb worked a solid five innings, striking out eight. The Griffins retook the lead in the top of the 6th on a bases loaded walk by Mulvey.  KSC would respond in the bottom of eighth, capitalizing on a Griffin error in the frame. The Owls would have bases loaded in the ninth with one out but relievers Dilks and Sciarretta were able to work out of the jam and force the game to extra innings. The Griffins would have a runner in scoring position in the 10th but were unable to bring the runner home. Keene State would be retired in order in the bottom half. With two outs in the top of the 11th, Blount connected on a two-run home run, his second in as many days, to put GMercyU on top 5-3 heading into the bottom of the inning. The Owls would rally in the 11th reaching on another two-out Griffin error and then get two, hits first by Joe Libby to cut the lead to 5-4 and then Billy Hartmann would hit a ball past the outstretched dive of Blount to get to the wall to score Libby and then would score on an errant throw from the outfield for the 6-5 come from behind victory. Sciarretta suffered the loss despite allowing no earned runs. Steven Zadravec would record the victory for Keene State.

For the trip, Curtin led the team with a .520 batting average (13-for-25), Nardini was not far behind, at a .500 (10-for-20) clip. Mulvey had 10 hits, and led the squad with six stolen bases and would add 10 RBI's

DiIanni would pick up two wins, yielding a 2.77 ERA on 10 hits on four runs in 13 innings of work. He struck out six and held opponents to a .217 average.

Gwynedd Mercy (6-5) will host Delaware Valley on Thursday in the Griffins' home opener which gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
