ST. MARY'S CITY, MD. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball Team traveled down south for a weekend getaway against St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday with the Griffins taking game 1 of the doubleheader, 10-4, but falling in the nightcap, 9-2.
GMercyU struck early and often, plating 10 runs over the first four innings in the first game of the double header. A
Chris Hens triple knocked in the first two runs of the day to give Gwynedd an early 2-0 lead in the first. In the second inning,
David Blount would bring home
Christian Carmolingo, reaching on a fielder's choice, to keep the Griffins inning alive.
Later in the same frame,
Dave Tatoian's single would set up a two-run double by
Beau Fleming for a 5-0 lead.
In the third,
Jason Mulvey would double to score Carmolingo followed by a Blount single to plate
Justin Curtin for the seven-run lead. In the fourth, the Griffins plated runs on a Carmolingo single, a walk and another Blount fielder's choice for his third RBI of the game.
Starting pitcher
Mike Di Ianni worked five scoreless innings allowing only a single hit in the fifth. He fanned five batters while only allowing one walk on the day.
Zach Dennis worked an inning and a third of scoreless relief while striking out two to help preserve the Griffin victory, their first on the season.
Mulvey finished 3-for-4 with a run and RBI while Hens went 2-for-3 with two runs knocked in and three defensive assists.
In game two, the Griffins took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third thanks to a two-run home run Tatoian, his first of his career. The Seahawks would retake the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs to go ahead, 3-2. The Griffins would have the tying run a third base in the top of the fifth but were unable to bring the run home. St. Mary's would capitalize in the bottom half of the inning scoring four runs and later plate two insurance runs in the sixth.
Blount and Tatoian both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Gino Tripodi would suffer the loss, only allowing three runs in three and two thirds innings while striking out three.
If the forecast holds true, the Griffins will travel to The College of New Jersey on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m
