Griffins Handed Playoff Exit, Fall To Cavaliers

2015 CSAC Tournament Semifinal

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Third-seeded Cabrini knocked out second-seeded Gwynedd Mercy, 67-56, Wednesday night in a semifinal game of the 2016 CSAC Tournament.
Charlotte Kucowski led GMercyU with 21 points as the junior added seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, but the Griffins saw a 7-0 run by Cabrini in the fourth quarter to put them in a double-digit deficit they were not able to come out from.

Meghan Martin scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half as the three-time defending champion Cavaliers (18-9) move on to the title game on Saturday.

Gwynedd would struggle early, missing their first six shots and along with four turnovers, would find themselves down 11-1 midway in the first. Kucowski's jumper at the 4:19 mark was the team's first field goal. The Griffins would score the final seven points of the stanza and trail by three (16-13) after one.

The turnover bug got to Cabrini to open the second as three mistakes keyed a 6-0 Gwynedd run capped off with a breakaway layup from Julianna Hoisington, forcing the Cavaliers to call a timeout. From there the two teams battled, as the stanza saw five lead changes and four ties. Two free throws from sophomore Larissa Leyes with 1:24 remaining put the Griffins up 33-31where it stood until halftime.

Martin would score all seven points of a 7-0 spurt to put Cabrini 40-35 early in the third. Kucowski would answer with a bucket inside and a three-pointer from senior Chandler DiFebbo would knot it up with 5:42 remaining in the period. Later, a three-point play from Nomi Washington would push the Cavalier lead back up to seven where they would take a 51-44 advantage with one final quarter to play.

After the Griffins gradually cut the Cavalier lead to just three in the beginning stages of the final period, Cabrini answered with a 7-0 run to put GMercyU in a double-digit deficit at the 5:02 mark. Gwynedd would get as close as six (60-54) with 1:32 left in the game, but could pull no closer.

Washington would add 13 points off the bench for Cabrini. Martin, Renee Oliver, and Kristina Startare each had eight rebounds apiece as the Cavaliers outrebounded Gwynedd, 42-34, including 20-13 on the offensive side.

Hoisington and junior Nicole Dombrowski each finished with nine points as the Griffins would shoot 35.1% for the game and hit 12-of-13 from the free-throw line.

The game marked the final appearance for the team's two seniors; DiFebbo and Olivia Bradford, who went a combined 70-37 in their four seasons as a Griffin.

Game Notes: Hoisington and Bianca Adams each doled out four assists…The four were a career high for Hoisington…The team totaled seven blocks, making it the sixth game with seven or more…Gwynedd was outrebounded for the third game in a row.

Gwynedd Mercy finishes the season with a final mark of 20-6.
