GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was able to pull away from visiting King's, 65-54, Thursday evening at The Griffin Complex.
Charlotte Kucowski recorded her sixth double-double on the season, posting game highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds, as the Griffins (3-4) erased a one-point deficit after three quarters outscoring the Monarchs, 23-11, in the final stanza.
Nicole Dombrowski scored eight of her 12 points in the second half with
Larissa Leyes hitting three of the team's three-pointers to finish with 11 points.
Both teams had trouble getting their offense going, as each shot under 35% in the first quarter with no team leading by more than three. GMercyU would trail, 13-12, after one.
From there, Gwynedd and King's managed to stay neck and neck early in the second before two free throws from Kucowski and a triple from Leyes would put the Griffins up, 31-23, with 2:26 before halftime. The team would shoot 8-for-13 (61%) in the second, but only lead, 33-29, at the half.
In the third, King's and Gwynedd were each 4-for-14 from the floor, but it was the Monarchs outscoring, GM, 14-9, in the stanza. Leyes wouldn't hit the team's first field goal of the period until there was 3:15 left. That bucket would help kickstart a run of points, first from
Chyanne Fine, as she was able to score down in the paint twice and a then a layup from
Alison Szyszko with 56 ticks to knot it up a 42-42. Rebecca Prociak would hit one of two at the line to put the Monarch's up by one heading into the final period.
In that momentum changing fourth, the Griffins shot 10-of-18 (55%) and hit three big treys. Kucowski would connect from downtown and
Bianca Adams would drill back-to-back bombs, helping turn a three-point lead into a 61-49 edge with 4:29 to go. The lead would not go under double digits as now the Griffins have won the last three over the Monarchs.
Prociak led King's (1-8) with 16 points. Teammate Olivia Hoffman added nine points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and five assists. As a team, the Monarchs finished at a 20-of-59 (33%) shooting clip.
Adams also dished out a game-high six assists for Gwynedd, who was 26-of-62 (41%) for the night.
The Griffins welcome Stockton this coming Monday at home at 7 p.m.
