Griffins Fall To Cabrini In CSAC Title Game

2016 CSAC Field Hockey Championship

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team fell 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to Cabrini in the 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship game.

After a scoreless first half, the teams combined for three goals in a four-minute span in the opening moments of the second half.

Alex Swallow scored the game's first goal to put Cabrini up 1-0 when she was able to put back a rebound from a shot by Taylor Mack in the crease in the 38th minute.

Less than three minutes later, Erika Cimino would answer for the Griffins to tie the game at 1-1 with her third goal of the season when she redirected a pass from Shannon Carroll.

However the Cavaliers would respond twenty six seconds later when Jackie Neary connected on a hard shot from the top of the crease for the eventual game winning goal.
The Griffin offense was limited to three shots the remainder of the game. Cabrini goalie Taylor Bookman would make 11 saves in total for the Cavs (12-7).

For the game Jackie Neary was named the Championship MVP. This was the sixth year in a row the two teams have met in the final and ninth year in a row Cabrini was in the title game. The Griffins are now 2-2 all-time in conference championship games at home. Ironically, Gwynedd lost in last season's game by the same score of 2-1.

Samantha Soscia recorded six saves in net for the Griffins. Noelle Schillinger added a defensive save as well. As a team, the GMercyU totaled 16 shots and had 21 penalty corners. Cabrini produced 10 shots and 10 corners.

Gwynedd Mercy closes the 2016 season with a final mark of 13-6. The game would also signal the end of the career of Cristen Pody, the team's lone senior.
