GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy and Marywood square off for the fifth meeting in the postseason between the two teams tonight at 5:45 p.m. in a semifinal matchup of the 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament.
The fifth-seeded Griffins (10-6-2) upended  fourth-seeded Immaculata, 2-0, on Monday night in a first-round matchup behind two goals from rookie
Samantha Brown and 11 saves from goalie
Kailey Hopkins.
GMercyU now turns its attention to the top-seeded Pacers in the semifinal round with a berth to the conference championship on Saturday at stake.
Marywood (9-5-2) edged the Griffins, 2-1, in their regular-season matchup back on October 4th. The teams met in the semifinal round last season here at home with Gwynedd winning, 5-1. They also met in Scranton in 2012 with the Griffins earning a 1-0 win and in 2009 where the Pacers prevailed, 2-1. In 2008, the teams clashed in the championship, but it was Marywood winning, 2-0.
Brown (5 goals) and
Meghan Petroski (9 goals/8 assists) will look to work some magic offensively. For Hopkins, she has been nothing short of dominant in net this season, posting nine shutouts with an 0.64 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.
For the Pacers, they earned the top-seed after finishing the CSAC regular season with a 9-1-1 mark, tied with 28 points with Cabrini. Marywood and the Cavaliers tied 0-0 during the regular season in Radnor, but MU took the #1 seed by virtue of a 21 goal differential compared to Cabrini's 16.Â
A trio of First Team All-CSAC honorees leads the Pacers: Danielle Rill, Megan Swiecicki and Julie Youngman Rill leads the Pacers' backline from a centerback position and has helped the team to six clean sheets on the year. Swiecicki leads the team in goals (13) and points (32) and ranks second in assists (6). Youngman leads the Pacers in helpers (8) and ranks second in goals (7) and points (22). Goalkeeper Aly Moyer (3 solo, 3 shared shutouts) has played nearly 1500 minutes in net and has a 1.79 goals against average overall but a 0.64 mark in conference play.
