DALLAS, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey Team suffered a tough 4-3 double overtime loss at Misericordia on Tuesday in both team's season opener.
The Griffins, who took a 2-1 lead in the early stages of the second half, found themselves down 3-2 before a goal from sophomore
Brianna O'Connell (Berlin, N.J./Eastern)Â at the 51:08 mark would knot the contest.
After nearly dominating in shots (23-11) and penalty corners (18-2), Gwynedd could not find the golden goal in the first extra session. It wasn't until the Cougars' Jennifer O'Neill scored with seven minutes remaining in the second overtime to win it for MU.
Down 1-0 midway in the first, Gwynedd (0-1) got on the board in the 32nd minute as senior
Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)Â converted on one of their seven penalty corners in the stanza. Senior
Megan Senkeleski (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank)Â added the assist.
Sophomore
Melissa Russo (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley)Â made it 2-1 just 2:52 into the second stanza with her tally. Misericordia would answer as Lindsay Hischak added her second score of the day minutes later. Less than 10 minutes later, Haley Gruber would put MU up 3-2. Gruber would assist on O'Neill's overtime winner.
Sophomore goalie
Samantha Soscia (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon)Â made five stops. Angelina Pasquini posted nine stops for Misericordia.
Gwynedd Mercy resumes action on Saturday when they head to Reading, Pa. to face off with Alvernia in a 2 p.m. start.
