Griffins Come Away With DH Sweep Of Rosemont

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy took two from visiting Rosemont in the Griffins' "Strike Out Cancer" Day. Game one was an 8-1 final while game two was a close 5-2 score.

The team wore special jerseys to help raise awareness for cancer research.

Gwynedd jumped out to an early lead in game one, crossing seven runs in the first three innings. A two-run triple by junior Marykate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), highlighted the first inning and an RBI single by Jess Mower (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) in the second inning keyed the early spike

Ballerino racked up three RBIs on three hits including a double for the Griffins. Freshman Tara Matteo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, two runs and an RBI.

Freshman pitcher Michele Arechavala (Mt. Ephraim, N.J../Audubon) baffled the Ravens, striking out a season-high six, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks.

In game two, Gwynedd and Rosemont traded the lead four times but a big four-run fourth was the difference. Freshman Jessica Behr (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Charter) came through with a big two-out, two-run triple in that fifth inning.

Jess Behr racked up a total of three RBIs on two hits.

Senior Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was a workhorse on the rubber, allowed just two earned runs on four hits and four walks. She fanned five over seven innings of work.

The Griffins are back in action tomorrow in a rescheduled DH with Cairn starting at 1 p.m.
