READING, PA. -- An old rivalry was renewed Monday night when the Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team traveled to Alvernia University for a non-conference matchup for the teams' second meeting since Alvernia left the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference in 2008 with the Griffins posting a 67-59 victory behind a career high 23-point performance by
Charlotte Kucowski.
The junior also recorded her third double-double on the season, adding 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Bianca Adams added 12 points and five assists.
Gwynedd (4-1) jumped out to an early 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.
Olivia Bradford and
Nicole Dombrowski led the Griffins with four points each in the frame with Bradford scoring the first four points of the game for GM.
The Griffins would outscore the Crusaders, 17-10, in the second quarter to take a 32-21 lead heading into the halftime break. Back-to-back three pointers by Kucowski stretched the Griffin lead to 25-14 halfway through the quarter. Adams would cap off the 9-0 run with a trey of her own to stretch the lead to 14 with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Kucowski led all scorers with eight points in the first two quarters.
Kucowski kept the hot hand in the start of the third quarter, scoring 10 points in the frame. The Griffins would also score 20 points in the stanza. A
Monet McGorda jumper would cap a 6-0 run to give GM a 50-33 lead, their largest of the game as well, late in the third.
The Crusaders (3-2) gave it a run and would cut the deficit to six (62-56) with 4:49 remaining. However it was the last Alvernia field goal for the rest of the game. A trio of Gwynedd free throws would seal the game with The Griffins coming away with the 67-59 final.
Dombrowski finished with nine points while Bradford chipped in six points and six rebounds.
Jenna Wolff led Alvernia with 24 points. She was the only player in double figures.
The Griffins return to action Wednesday night when they host Summit University in their CSAC opener. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
