BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Team chemistry was at an all time high this afternoon as the Gwynedd Mercy Women's Soccer Team defeated the Patriots of Valley Forge University, 7-0, in non-conference play. The victory puts the Griffins at 2-4 for the season and ends a four-game winless streak.
The Griffins got on the board early when junior
Megan Gifford (North Wales, Pa./ Lansdale Catholic) connected with senior
Casey Gaughan (Philadelphia, Pa./ Villa Joseph Marie) at 37:50 for the first goal of the day. Just a few minutes later the Griffins struck again when Gaughan found freshmen
Meghan Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./ Little Flower) in front of the net at 35:11 to put Gwynedd up 2-0.
With 12:32 left in the first half the Griffins found the back of the net once more when sophomore
Victoria Dray (Staten Island, N.Y./ St. John Villa Academy) slipped passed her defender to put the Griffins up 3-0.
In the second half the Griffins would record goals from Gaughan, Gifford and a pair from junior
Kerri Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./ Little Flower). Both Gaughan and Gifford would record two assists on the day and sophomore
Ariety Fellenz (Jackson, N.J./ Jackson Liberty) added one.
Overall, Gwynedd fired off a season-high 37 shots compared to VFC's 1.
Patriot senior goaltender Amanda McGinness, was kept busy, recording 16 saves in the loss for VFC. Gwynedd keeper
Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) made one save for her first shutout of the season and 16th in her career.
Next, the Griffins hit the road to take on Marywood in their first conference matchup of the season with 1 p.m. start.
