true Gwynedd Mercy 2, Alvernia 1
BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy field hockey team snagged its second win of the season on a rainy Saturday afternoon with an exciting 2-1 win over Alvernia University. The victory leaves the Griffin's record at 2-2.
In the first half the Griffins outshot the Crusaders 5-4 and had the advantage in corners 5-1, but the Crusaders defense was up to task. Even though the Griffins were on the attack for majority of the half, the Crusaders got on the board first when junior Emily Kelly (Westminster, Md./Towson) knocked in a rebound 2:08.
At the start of the second half the Crusaders came out strong with a few quick shots. Scoreless for nearly 29 minutes of play, Gwynedd called a timeout to regroup with just 6:00 minutes remaining. Immediately following the timeout, freshmen
Brianna O'Connell (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern) would give the Griffins the extra momentum they needed by finding the back of the cage on a high shot at 5:34.
With just under two minutes remaining junior
Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Holy Cross) assisted junior
Katie O'Neil (Warrington, Pa. / Council Rock North) on the final goal of the game to give the Griffins the win.
Senior goaltender
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, P.A./Methacton) had another strong performance and recorded 9 saves to secure the victory.
The Griffins will hit the road again on Tuesday when they face Widener University. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
