Team Effort Carries Men's Soccer Past Cairn University, 2-1

October 07, 2014

true GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA.-- The Gwynedd Mercy Men's Soccer team picked up their third win cruising past the Highlanders of Cairn University, 2-1, Tuesday evening in conference action.  A solid team effort got the Griffins up early to solidify the win putting them at 3-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Freshmen Eric Smith (Deptford, N.J./ GCIT) got ahold of a loose ball deflected off Cairn goaltender Ivan Jasso (Houston, TX/ Waller) just three minutes into the game to get the offense going.  Not long after, Smith would then find junior Rich Mychack (Philadelphia, Pa./ Father Judge) in the box who would bury a shot to put the Griffins up 2-0.  The Griffins went on to hold the Highlanders scoreless in the half outshooting them 8-3 and taking the advantage in corners at 2-1.

With 15 minutes remaining in the second half the Highlanders would score their lone goal of the game.  Senior Justin Nolan (Philadelphia, Pa./ International Christian) fired a shot past goaltender Ryan Oyola (Tabernacle, N.J./ Seneca) to put Cairn behind just one goal.

Oyola would close out the day with 3 saves overall in his fifth start this season.  Freshmen goaltender for the Highlanders, Ivan Jasso, would record 5 saves before exiting the game due to injury.

Gwynedd Mercy returns to conference action on Saturday when they travel to Neumann University for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
