true Cabrini 2, Gwynedd Mercy 1
BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Soccer team was handed their first conference loss Thursday evening as they hosted the Cavaliers of Cabrini College. Both teams entered the game undefeated in conference play, 6-0, but the Cavaliers came out on top, 2-1. The loss puts the Griffins at 6-1 in conference and 8-5 overall.
Ties have been the result of regular season matchups between the duo since 2011. But, with tonight's win, the Cavs cracked the Griffins seven-game winning streak and pushed themselves into sole possession of first place.
Cabrini got ahead first in the 24th minute when senior Gabby Meck (Mercerville, N.J./ Notre Dame) connected a pass with junior Devon Miller (Broomall, Pa./ Marple Newtown), for her first collegiate goal, to put the Cavs up 1-0. Not long after, the Griffins would answer when sophomore
Ariety Fellenz (Jackson, N.J./ Jackson Liberty) would sink in a shot off a rebound to even the score. The Cavs would go on to outshoot the Griffins, 5-3, in the half and take the advantage in corners at 4-2.
Unable to connect offensively, the Cavs would hold the Griffins to just two more shots on the day. In the 61st minute of the second half, junior Dana Peterson (Woodbridge, N.J./ Bishop Ahr) would net a pass off a free kick to put the Cavs up 2-1. Cabrini fired off six shots in the half as they held off the Griffins for the win.
Griffins junior goaltender,
Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J./ Cherry Hill West), would close out the day with a solid eight saves. Cavalier goaltender, freshmen Alivia Dietsch (Philadelphia, Pa./ Franklin Towne Charter), would solidify the win with one.
The Griffins are off until Monday, when they host Alvernia University (5-8) at 5:30 p.m.
