BOX SCOREWASHINGTON – Despite 24 points from senior
Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), Gwynedd Mercy lost at Catholic, 84-72, Monday evening in a non-conference matchup.
For the third time this season, the Griffins could not hold a double-figure lead as GM slips to 4-8 overall. The Cardinals improve to 8-3.
Smith was 7-of-16 from the floor including a 4-for-8 performance from downtown and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. Senior
Nicole Dougherty (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) added 11 while juniors
Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) each chipped in 10 apiece.
Emily Grabiak poured in a game-high 26 points as she added a 12-for-14 effort at the charity stripe.
Things looked good for GM early in the first, getting out to an 8-0 lead. Yori would get fouled on a three-point attempt and would hit all three attempts. Later, two Dougherty free throws would give Gwynedd a 29-17 edge with 7:19 in the half. From there, the Cardinals would close the stanza on a 23-5 run to lead 40-34 at the half.
Despite keeping within reach for most of the second, Gwynedd musted only two field goals in the final 6:36 as Catholic turned a nine-point lead (72-63) into an 86-65 edge with just over a minute in the game.
Bernadette Launi grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cardinals while she and teammate Josephine Migash netted 17 points each.
Gwynedd was hit 10-of-13 tries from the line while Catholic got GM in foul trouble to go to the stripe 39 times, making 30 attempts.
The Griffins play their third game in five days on Wednesday when they travel to Centenary in CSAC action.
