Griffins fall in double overtime on opening night

Gwynedd-Mercy's men's soccer team suffered a heart breaking defeat Friday night 3-2 in double overtime against Penn State-Abington. The Griffins overcame a two goal deficit before falling in the 106th minute.

Abington got on the board early and found themselves ahead 2-0 fifteen minutes into the contest. Alex Martins put the Nittany Lions up 1-0 at the 6:06 mark. Andre Lynahping followed with his goal just after the 15th minute mark. However the Grififns would stage a comeback. Chris Black (Philadelphia, Pa. / Northeast) scored the first goal of the season for Gwynedd at the 39:58 mark to cut the lead just before the half.

In the second half sophomore Rich Mychack (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge)  would tie the contest at 2-2 in the 70th minute to score his first goal on the season for Gwynedd.

Daniel Ortiz however earned the final score of the contest giving Abington the victory 3-2.

Dan Saint-Pol picked up the win in net for the Nittany Lions recording three saves. Sophomore keepers Matt Chilcote (Carlisle, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) and Greg Gengaro (Bloomsbury, N.J. / Phillipsburg) saw action in net for the Griffins. Chilcote stopped four shots and Gengaro made one save.

Gwynedd returns back to action on Tuesday evening traveling to longtime rival Alvernia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
