GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated Notre Dame, 2-0, in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Thursday night to win their second game in a row.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard early when
Maura Gifford (North Wales, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) found the back of the net at the 17:13 mark to score the 20th goal of her career. The goal was set up by a beautiful ball from
Casey Gaughan (Philadelphia, Pa. / Villa Joseph Marie). Gwynedd would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half
Theo Horozoglou (Holland, Pa. / Council Rock South) put the Griffins on top 2-0 when she scored off of a corner kick from
Kerri Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa. / Little Flower). The Griffins defense would shut down the Gator offense for the remainder of the half to record their second shutout in a row.
Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) recorded three saves on the night as the sophomore recorded the 13th shutout of her career. Her counterpart Heather Lancelotti stopped eight shots for the Gators.
The Griffins controlled the pace of play, outshooting Notre Dame, 15-5, and they also held a 6-2 corner advantage.
Gwynedd returns back to action on Saturday when they host Cedar Crest in a CSAC tilt. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
