GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A last-second goal in overtime was the difference as Gwynedd Mercy suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Keystone in a CSAC contest Tuesday afternoon.
The Griffins (0-8-3, 0-2-2 CSAC) held every statistical advantage, outshooting the Giants, 27-8, and having a 10-1 corner kick edge, but it was Rebecca Dinelli scoring her second goal of the game to sink Gwynedd.
Her first goal came in the first half as she was able to get a handle on a misplay in the box off of Gwynedd goalie
Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) for a 1-0 lead. The Griffins kept up the offensive pressure in the second, resulting in the tying goal from
Theo Horozoglou (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South). The sophomore was able to get just enough of a shot in a scramble in the box, which deflected off a Keystone defender for her first goal this season. Senior
Maura Gifford (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) added the assist.
In the first overtime, Gwynedd had a late chance up close, but a tough angle shot from freshman
Ariety Fellenz (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) went wide left. Gifford gave GM another golden scoring opportunity in the second overtime, as she would slip through the Keystone defense on a breakaway, but her attempt sailed wide of the goal.
With time running out, Dinelli settled a bouncing ball cleared out from her defensive zone too two steps and fired from 25 yards out, hitting the crossbar and deflecting in past Tadley just before the horn sounded.
Tadley would finish with three saves. Katelyn Coon recorded 14 stops for Keystone (8-1-1, 3-1-1 CSAC).
Gwynedd is back in action a week from today when they host Neumann in CSAC action starting at 6 p.m.
