GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Baptist Bible in their Colonial States Athletic Conference opener Saturday morning.
Prior to the game, both teams held a moment a silence for former Gwynedd-Mercy Field Hockey Player Kristy Kelleher, who tragically lost her life this summer in an auto accident.
Sophomore
Tyler Ward (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic) registered a goal and an assist while juniors
Dan Panepresso (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and
Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J./Paul VI) each added tallies as the Griffins (1-6, 1-0 CSAC) rallied with three unanswered scores.
The Defenders (1-5, 0-1 CSAC) got on the board in the 13th minute as GM was called for a foul inside the box. Caleb Evans converted on the penalty kick to give BBC a 1-0 lead.
Sotell and the Griffins answered under four minutes later as the junior netted his first of the season at the 16:28 mark.
Soon after, Ward would set up Panepresso in the 21st minute to make it 2-1 where it stood until the end of the half.
In the second half, the Griffins turned up the offensive pressure, recording seven of their eight corner kicks in the stanza. The push would pay off as Ward made it 3-1 off an assist from junior
Tim Stahl (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan).
GM outshot the Defenders, 17-12. Griffin goalie
Matt Chilcote (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made three saves. Dillon Bowman recorded 10 for BBC.
Gwynedd-Mercy returns to action on Monday when they play at Penn State-Brandywine.
