Arcadia 2, Gwynedd-Mercy 1
BOX SCORE
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy fell to visiting Arcadia, 2-1, on Wednesday night under the lights. This is the second game in a row that the Griffins (2-4) have lost by just a lone goal.
The Knights dominated the first half in all facets of the game outshooting the Griffins, 11-1, and scoring the lone goal of the half by Kim Canfield to take a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
The beginning of the second stanza was a different story. GM came out with an aggressive offensive attack. That aggressiveness paid off as the Griffins were awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. Junior
Maura Gifford (North Wales, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) stepped up to the mark and buried her shot in the back of the net to tie the contest 1-1 at the 58:46 mark.
Both teams would play even for the next fifteen minutes until a foul gave Arcadia a free kick from twenty five yards out. Rachel Dolly played a ball that found the foot of Nina Barbieri inside the 18 that found the back of the net to give Arcadia the lead once again.
The Griffins would not quit, though, producing three opportunities to try and tie the contest in the last ten minutes led by senior
Meghan Bojanowski (Philadelphia, Pa. / St. Hubert). The best came within the final seconds when GM was given a free kick just outside the eighteen but Bojanowski's shot off the restart just went high over the cross bar.
Freshman goalie
Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) had another phenomenal game for the Griffins recording seven saves. Her counterpart Veronica Willig made one save for the Knights.
Arcadia (3-2-1) outshot the Griffins, 13-7, and held a 6-3 corner advantage.
The Griffins return back to action on Saturday and host Notre Dame of Maryland University to open CSAC play. Kickoff is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
