RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy and Cabrini clashed in the 2012 CSAC Championhip, playing 110 minutes with no score, sending both teams to penalty kicks, but it was the Cavaliers outlasting the Griffins, 5-4, in a hard-faught battle by both squads to claim the conference title on Sunday.

The Griffins put together a series of opportune scoring chances in the first, only to see the Cavaliers stymie those efforts. In one of their five corner kicks in the stanza, freshman Kerri Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) got a good head of steam a few yards from the goal on one of those corners in the 10th minute, but her shot went right to the hands of Cavalier goalie Maddy Edwards. Later, in the 28th minute, senior Meghan Bojanowski (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) had a great look just outside the box but her hard shot hit the bottom of the crossbar, bounced straight down and somehow managed to stay out of the Cabrini goal.

In all, GM held an 8-4 shooting edge for the first 45 minutes while Edwards had two saves compared to freshman Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), who had four.

The second half saw GM continue the offensive pressure, creating four corner kicks, but could only manage three shots. After two scoreless halves, both teams entered overtime again as the two squads played to a 1-1 draw in their regular-season meeting back on September 29th.

Once in the overtime, Cabrini had three shots in the first session, and two in the second, but Tadley was able to keep the Cavs off the scoreboard as she made two saves.

The stat totals saw Cabrini outshoot GM, 16-11. Tadley would finish with eight saves. Edwards totaled five.

The shootout round begins with a best-of-five format. If the teams are still tied, they move to a best-of-three. The Cavaliers shot first, as Dana Drake beat Tadley. Junior Maura Gifford (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) answered, beating Edwards. Cabrini's chance in round 2 was saved, giving GM a chance to go ahead. They did, using shootout goals from senior Christine Michalski (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) and sophomore Casey Gaughan (Philadelphia, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) to lead 3-2. Gwynedd had two chances to win it, but attempts from Bojanowski and Petroski were no good. Bree Thompson would score for Cabrini to continue the chess match. After trading goals, Edwards the goalie, was able to beat Tadley on her try. Needing a goal to continue the shootout, Tadley's brilliant attempt hit the right post, ending the Griffins' hopes for a second conference title.

The Griffins were making their third appearance in the conference championship (2001, 2008). It was the first shootout game for GM since a PAC First-Round Playoff game against Wesley in 2006, where the Wolverines escaped with a 4-2 win in penalty kicks in Gwynedd Valley.
