GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Cairn Saturday afternoon on Senior Day, 1-0, in a crucial match with CSAC playoff implications.  With the win the Griffins gain three important points and move into a tie for the last playoff spot with two conference games remaining.

Before the game, head coach Dave Bontempo honored the team's three seniors Kevin Festick (North Wildwood, N.J. / Wildwood), Michael Genna (Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana) and Nick Stangler (Philadelphia, Pa. / North Catholic).

In the first half, both teams played dead even with both teams having five shots on goal but none of them were able to find the back of the net.  Three minutes and fourteen seconds into the second half Gwynedd (6-11-1, 2-4-1 CSAC) was able to break the scoreless game to give them a 1-0 advantage. The sequence started when Ryan Roedel (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) had his shot saved by Cairn goalie Dave Shaffer to set up a GM corner. Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) then sent the corner kick into the box where Rich Mychack (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) made a perfect read and was able head a shot past Shaffer to put GM on top at the 48:14 mark.

It was the freshman's second goal on the season.

The Griffins then were able to keep the Highlanders from tying the contest using strong play from their back line to keep all-conference forward Gary Bruce off the scoreboard.

Freshman goalie Greg Gengaro recorded three saves for his second shutout on the year. His counterpart Shaffer stopped five for the Highlanders (6-8-3, 3-4 CSAC).

GM outshot Cairn 12-9, but had a 5-2 corner disadvantage.

The Griffins return to action traveling to Immaculata for another big matchup on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. A loss by either team will most likely end  any playoff hopes.
