true Alvernia 1, Gwynedd-Mercy 0
BOX SCORE
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Alvernia's Josh Wollaston's goal in the 51st minute stood to be the lone tally as Gwynedd-Mercy fell to the Crusaders, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon.
The Griffins (1-2) hung tough, despite being outshot, 20-6. Senior goalie
Mike Leonard (Glen Mills, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) kept GM in the contest as he made eight stops. He got some help in the first half, as Alvernia's Eric Franks shot after a scramble in front, got away from Leonard and appeared to head in, but the defense was able to clear it out of harm's way.
Leonard wasn't so lucky in the second half on a similiar play as Alvernia (2-1) netted the game's only score as this time the ball just barely crept over the goal line.
Gwynedd had two good scoring chances, each in one half, and both from sophomore
Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson). His hustle on a ball played back for AU keeper Ben Diller was intercepted by Sotell and his ensuing shot from 20 yards out was deflected out of bounds.
Sotell would have another good look late in the contest as he took a feed up the right side and into the box, but his shot sailed across the goal mouth.
Diller finished with one save for the Crusaders.
The Griffins return to action this weekend when they play at the Jimmy Mills Tournament hosted by Haverford. On Saturday, GM will take on Randolph College at 3:30 p.m. and then the host Fords on Sunday also at 3:30 p.m. Live stats are available, just click on the link on the team schedule and on the home page the day of the game.
