LANGHORNE, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy came away with a 1-0 victory at Philadelphia Biblical in their Colonial States Athletic Conference opener Wednesday afternoon.

The Griffins (3-8, 1-0 CSAC) used a strong defensive effort and excellent goalie play from keeper Mike Leonard (Glen Mills, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) to record their third team shutout of the season as the senior made four saves.

The two teams battled for momentum for the first 20 minutes of the game until sophomore Dan Panepresso (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) put the Griffins ahead with a rebound goal off the post of a shot from senior Tim Sweeney (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge).

From there, the defensive combination of sophomore Christian Pembroke (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and freshman Ryan Roedel (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) shut down PBU (3-6, 0-3 CSAC) The Crimson Eagles' Gary Bruce had a prime opportunity to tie the contest less than five minutes to play, but Leonard made a key save keeping PBU off the board.

Dave Shaffer recorded three saves for PBU, while being outshot 12-10 to the Griffins.

Gwynedd-Mercy hosts Neumann University on Saturday in a CSAC matchup in a 12 p.m. kickoff.
