GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --- The Griffins used a strong team effort to defeat fellow Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Cedar Crest, 3-0, on Wednesday to nail down their first win on the season.
The Griffins were led by senior forward
Gwen Conte (Cherry Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace) with a two-goal effort. Conte's first goal came from a beautiful through ball in the 10th minute by teammate
Maura Gifford (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) for a 1-0 lead, which stayed that way until halftime.
Her second goal of the game came midway in the second off of a rebound from junior forward
Meghan Bojanowski (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), beating the goalie to give the Griffins a two-goal edge. Gwynedd-Mercy's last goal came in the 72nd minute as Conte set up Bojanowski on a cross through the box.
The Griffins (1-7-1) outshout the Falcons, 31-4, and held a 10-0 corner kick advantage.
Senior goalkeeper
Abby Reed (Manheim, Pa/Manheim Central) collected her second shutout of the season on two saves. Krysten Gillan recorded eight saves for Cedar Crest (0-4-1).
Gwynedd-Mercy is now 1-1 in CSAC play and Cedar Crest falls to 0-2 in league play. The Griffins will host Keystone College Saturday with a 12:30pm start.
