AMHERST, MA. -- Amherst defeated Gwynedd-Mercy, 7-0, in a first-round game of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, ending a succesful season for the Griffins.
The Lord Jeffs, out of the NESCAC, struck early in the first for a 1-0 lead 7:44 into the contest. Gm trailed just 2-0 at the half, but were being outshot 18-7 in the first 35 minutes. GM put together a offensive push, setting up three penalty corners in the final three minutes of the stanza, but could not get on the board.
Two more tallies in the first 13 minutes of the second opened up a 4-0 Amherst lead.
For the game, Gwynedd was outshot, 41-12. The Lord Jeffs held a 15-8 penalty corner edge.
GM goalie
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) wsa kept busy, making 13 saves. Rachel Tannenbaum recorded six for Amherst (14-3).
Gwynedd-Mercy, who captured their second CSAC Championship and posted an undefeated CSAC mark, finishes the 2011 season at 16-5.
