GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- In a game where the Griffins needed a point to stay alive in the CSAC playoff hunt, they assured themselves three points with a goal off the foot of sophomore
Dan Panepresso (Philadelphia, Pa. / Archbishop Ryan) in overtime to give Gwynedd-Mercy a 3-2 victory over visiting Centenary Tuesday night.
In the first half head coach
Dave Bontempo looked to his bench for a spark and found it in freshman midfielder
Kevin Elmer (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) who put the ball just past the goal line to give the Griffins a 1-0 advantage in the 33rd minute. However Centenary would not fold tying the contest 1-1 just over a minute later by a goal from forward Quinn Khouri.
The Griffins would use their next corner kick to take a 2-1 lead heading into halftime as sophomore forward
Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Paul VI) played a ball that found the head of midfielder
Nick Stangler (Philadelphia, Pa. / North Catholic) for the junior's second career goal.
In the second half the Cyclones would not go down quietly. Centenary was able to tie it at 2-2 in the 77th minute as a ball that deflected off a Gwynedd-Mercy defender caused a free ball in the box right to the foot of Michael Marin and into the goal.
In overtime the Griffins used some magic of their own with Panepresso used his dribble to beat the keeper at 96:13 to secure the Gwynedd-Mercy the victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Mike Leonard (Glen Mills, Pa / Cardinal O'Hara) had nine saves on the contest. His counterpart, Jason Rogers recorded five saves for the Cyclones (9-6-2, 4-4 CSAC).
Gwynedd-Mercy (6-13, 4-5 CSAC) will host Goucher College on Saturday in the regular-season finale with a kickoff at 12 p.m. The Griffins will need a little help from other teams in league games this weekend to help them clinch a playoff berth.
