Game-Winner Versus Saints Scores Hughes AEC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Lancaster, Pa. – (4/11/2023) – Gwynedd Mercy University sophomore Richie Hughes (Turnersville, N.J.) netted the overtime game-winner in a 17-16 final versus league rival, Marymount University (Apr. 5) and finished the affair with six points (5 goals, assist) and a ground ball to earn the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week title. This is the first career AEC Weekly Report appearance for Hughes, who currently ranks fifth on the team in goals (10) and fourth - or tied for fourth – in assists (7), points (17), and shots (49).

Gwynedd Mercy University (4-7, 2-0) led Marymount University (4-8, 1-1) by a 9-5 measure at halftime of this Saturday afternoon's AEC contest. But the Griffins' 5-1 second quarter was equaled by slight Saint advantages in the third (5-3) and fourth (6-4) as the affair went to overtime on a 16-16 stalemate. There, a late opportunity for Hughes was converted to demand victorious cheers from the Gwynedd Mercy faithful; 17-16 (1:13).

Each side scored four goals in the first quarter and most came unassisted. Gwynedd Mercy University's first two came from Hughes (13:59, 8:48) with succeeding scores following from sophomore midfielder Ian Kish (Easton, Pa.) (3-2, 7:10) and sophomore attack Dominic Romania (Phoenixville, Pa.) (4-2, 5:40). The Griffins separated with an impressive second quarter; five consecutive scores gave the Griffins a 9-5 edge with 1:23 remaining. Gwynedd Mercy University was more efficient than Marymount University (16-of-51, .314) as they scored on 17-of-39 (.436) shots. They were also 22-of-31 (.710) on the clear and 12-of-33 (.364) on the face-off, while recovering 25 ground balls and causing seven of the Saints' 19 turnovers.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Tuesday, April 12, when they visit Marywood University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
