Huge Fourth Quarter Helps Rally Griffins Past Centenary

Team hosts Senior Day

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy used a big fourth-quarter to rally past Centenary on Senior Day, as the Griffins posted an 8-6 win over the Cyclones on Saturday.

After Centenary scored with 6:41 left in the third quarter to take a 6-3 lead, the Griffin defense did not allow another goal the rest of the way.

Tony McCraw opened the scoring in the fourth to get within two goals. Later in the fourth, GMercyU would cash in on a Centenary penalty as Jacob Snavely tallied to get the lead to just one, but he wasn't done yet. After a faceoff win by McCraw, Snavely added his second score on the day just eight seconds later to finally tie the game up at 6-6.

Three minutes later, Alfonso Manzo would take a feed from Ryan Simpson to give Gwynedd its first lead. Just under a minute later, Manzo would return to the favor, setting up Simpson with an insurance score with 3:06 left in the game.

Gwynedd would fall behind early in the first, as the Cyclones scored two unassisted goals in the first 2:09 of the contest.

Tommy Belmont would get the Griffins on the board at the 5:46 mark. After Centenary answered, Dillon Cave scored with 1:42 left in the quarter as Gwynedd trailed 3-2 after one.

The second quarter saw Gwynedd total four shots while the Cyclones would score two late goals, the last coming with 18 seconds before the half.

There were two goals scored in the third. The first from Simpson just over a minute into the stanza, as the freshman potted his first man-up goal of the season. The second was from Centenary's Michael Muff, which would turn out to be the last.

Both goalies were up to snuff, keeping their teams in the contest. Gwynedd keeper Sean Myers made six of his nine saves in the second half while Centenary's Kevin Switzer posted 10 stops.

Prior to the game, the team honored its nine seniors: McCraw, Belmont, Nick Harkins, Nolan Soulas, Brandon Brown, Brad Keeney, Tom Terra, Blase Cesarone, and Nick Guglielmi.

Simpson led GM with three points on two goals and an assist while Manzo and Belmont each had a goal and a helper. Manzo also caused three turnovers and Marc Bushong scooped up a game-high six groundballs.

The Griffins, who also clinched a playoff berth, play at Keystone next Saturday with a chance to nail down the #2 playoff seed and a home semifinal game.
