RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy claimed their third-straight CSAC Field Hockey Championship with a 4-2 win at Cabrini on Saturday.

Katie O'Neill (Warminster, Pa./Council Rock North) was named the MVP as the sophomore scored twice and assisted on another goal.

The Griffins now take the conference's automatic bid and punch their ticket to the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins on Wednesday, November 13th. Selections will be made on Monday, November 11th. Check back to www.gwyneddathletics.com for all the details.

This was the fourth year in a row Gwynedd and Cabrini squared off in the finals, with the last two in Gwynedd Valley and with the home team coming out on top each time. O'Neill and the Griffins looked to break that trend.

She would score the game's first goal at the 11:14 mark with an assist from Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross). It then became 2-0 Gwynedd, 11 minutes later as O'Neill set up Briane Kline (York, Pa./East York) on a penalty corner. GM would hold that two-goal lead, going into the half.

The Cavaliers (10-8) would respond early in the second stanza, getting a pair of goals from Kerry Anne Farrell to knot the teams at 2-2.

But Gwynedd broke through for good, as Bacho put GM back on top with an unassisted tally with over 22 minutes to go. O'Neill then added an insurance score less than four minutes later. It was O'Neill's second career two-goal game.

From there, the Griffin defense endured through six Cabrini corners, including two within the final minute, but were able to find a way to keep the ball out of the cage. Goalie Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) made six saves on 11 Cavalier shots. Gwynedd fired off 14, seven of which were saved, and four from Cabrini goalie Genevieve Paulin.

The win avenges a similar 4-2 defeat to Cabrini at the GM Athletic Complex back on October 16th.
