GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Three unanswered goals from Gwynedd Mercy allowed the Griffins to move on to the CSAC Championship with a 3-0 semifinal win over Immaculata Wednesday night.
The Griffins will play at the Cabrini College Cavaliers, who were 3-0 winners over Neumann in the other semifinal, on Saturday in the title game.
Senior
Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) had a goal and an assist as Gwynedd (11-8) fell behind 18 minutes into the contest. The Mighty Macs' Lindsay Cras was able to put back a loose ball on a breakaway from Brittany Robertson for a 1-0 lead.
GM would answer in the 33rd minute, as
Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross) got her stick on a shot from
Brianne Kline (York, Pa./Central York) on a penalty corner for a deflection up and over IU goalie Sarah Pasternack.
Karidas made it 2-1 early in the second as she put home a loose ball on a penalty corner. She then set up
Katie Hickson (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) less than three minutes later for a two-goal edge.
Pasternack would make 10 saves for IU (6-13). Junior goalie
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) recorded four stops.
Gwynedd will make its fourth-straight appearance in the championship, where they'll face Cabrini yet again. GM won it in 2011 and 2012 while the Cavaliers took the 2010 crown.
